Top 10 Role Playing Games (RPG) of 2022

It was hard to narrow a list down to just 10 games because 2022 has been a great year for this genre. This year, fans of RPGs have laced up their boots, and are unlikely to have played much else, given the sheer number of hours required to complete these 10 games. Here is our pick for 10 outstanding RPG of 2022.

10. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Release Date Metacritic Rating IGN Rating
November 2022 72% 6/10

As the Pokemon franchise proceeds its move to an open-world format, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet made a highly incredible debut in terms of sales. There is no loading screen and you may fast-travel with a legendary Pokemon that you acquire early on in the game, making for a very open and accessible world.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet provide a safe haven for fans of the originals looking to relive their glory days, while the helpful hints ensure that those unfamiliar with the series won’t have to remember the game’s fundamentals from the first game. Given the history of the Pokemon franchise, the lack of innovation and radical change is understandable. This generation has benefited greatly from the adjustments made to make the experience more tailored to each person.

9. Tiny Tina’s Wonderland

Release Date Metacritic Rating IGN Rating
March 2022 76% 8/10

Tiny Tina Wonderlands is ridiculous, aggressive, and as sophisticated as a statue in a china shop, but it’s still a great deal of enjoyment. It has progressed from just another RPG in 2022 to an unforgettable game to play thanks to its humorous main storyline.

Its side quests can take you to new areas, and a mode, which activates after the credits and can keep you and two friends hooked for weeks. It’s not the best game of the year by any stretch, but it’s the kind of game you can enjoy losing hours of your time to.

8. Dying Light 2: Stay Human

Release Date Metacritic Rating IGN Rating
February 2022 76% 7/10

Faster than a speeding bullet, the outbreak swept over the old world, bringing with it a catastrophe that hit people like a ton of bricks. Many people never saw their loved ones or acquaintances again; others lost all sense of humanity altogether, losing touch with reality and reverting to savagery. After more than a decade, however, the community has adjusted to its new reality and divided into rival factions. Primitive drives are once again governed by the need to stay alive.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human plays like any other open-world game. Its desire to develop causes it to scatter its attention among a vast range of activities. However, this game is a pleasant and fulfilling experience thanks to the emphasis on parkour and the player’s connection with the environment. Aiden’s backstory is shrouded in secrecy, along with the rest of the story’s characters and the reader is compelled to learn more about their intentions and backgrounds.

7. Pokemon Legends: Arceus

Release Date Metacritic Rating IGN Rating
January 2022 83% 7/10

From the perspective of a player who has followed Pikachu for 25 years, Pokemon Legends: Arceus represents a revolution for the franchise. It’s not like the rest of the world hasn’t been waiting for Pokemon to arrive.

We are far from a work of genius or the finest video game in the franchise, but after two decades of the same static fights and ever-increasingly bizarre and strong Pokemon, it is refreshing to witness such a drastic difference.

6. Stray

Release Date Metacritic Rating IGN Rating
July 2022 83% 8/10

With the right approach, Stray can be finished in a single sitting, although completing all the optional quests and unlockables will take two afternoons. The game is charming, appealing, and capable of presenting a tough but entertaining challenge without being overly difficult or ambitious.

Without disclosing specifics, Stray has the potential to cause a little emotional pain. Yet, it’s obvious to us that being a cat has never been more charming, exciting, or fascinating.

5. Tactics Ogre: Reborn

Release Date Metacritic Rating GameSpot Rating
November 2022 86% 8/10

We’re not kidding when we say that Tactics Ogre: Reborn meets one of the greatest strategic RPG in 2022. It features numerous updates to the PSP version, most of which are centered on the gameplay but also on the sound quality, rendering it suitable for players of all experience levels.

However, fans of the genre and of Tactics Ogre in particular will appreciate the game’s enhanced presentation the most. There’s no better way to break into the SRPG genre than with this timeless classic.

4. Horizon Forbidden West

Release Date Metacritic Rating IGN Rating
February 2022 88% 9/10

Horizon: Forbidden West is a solid sequel that develops the story from the original game, but it also accomplishes some truly unique things, such as removing the use of generic animations from the game’s deep, classic RPG dialogues and open areas.

There is no repetition of gestures or animations, even in the most unimportant secondary mission, despite the thousands of lines of speech and the fact that each exchange is captured individually using motion capture technology. Many of the side missions may be played at your own pace, with unique storylines, characters, and circumstances created especially for you. Horizon: Forbidden West was an early RPG release in 2022, and it has left its imprint.

3. Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Release Date Metacritic Rating IGN Rating
July 2022 89% 8/10

You can expect everything you might want from this chapter of Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and more. It takes the best parts of the previous games and improves upon them with a fantastic plot, a polished combat system, and hours upon hours of exploration. Overall, the shift in tone from XC2 is really satisfying, restoring the gravity of XC1 even as systems like the chain attack are reimplemented and new features like Uroboros are added.

It’s a breath of fresh air, a reimagining of the series that delivers on the promise of “more and better” while retaining the series’ trademark accessibility and technical excellence. Do not hesitate; if you enjoy Japanese role-playing games, this is a must-have, and if you are new to the genre, this is a great time to get into it.

2. God of War: Ragnarok

Release Date Metacritic Rating IGN Rating
November 2022 94% 10/10

It’s clear that Santa Monica Studio intended God of War (2018) to be only a teaser for what was to come. God of War: Ragnarok is an aesthetically and narratively stunning game. It’s one of the most exciting games in recent memory.

The creators of the game were able to build upon the foundation of what made it great four years ago. A work of art in every sense of the word was delivered: amusing, passionate, and shocking. Needless to say, the race for GOTY 2022 was quite tight.

1. Elden Ring

Release Date Metacritic Rating IGN Rating
February 2022 94% 10/10

There is no denying that Elden Ring is a masterpiece. With the bar set so high by From Software, it’s difficult to see how the developer can top themselves with their next games. The mechanics, which are well established, appear to be the sole remaining area for improvement.

We’re talking about a stunning game here, one that succeeds artistically by creating a world with a visual depth that most other games can only dream of. The game’s engaging narrative pulls us in and compels us to make a variety of choices, expanding the area of play and the scope of the roles available. Elden Ring is a priceless addition to any Souls fan’s library. Unquestionably, one of the finest RPG of 2022.
